Brotherly Love

A CALL TO ACTION

Brotherly Love: Men for Women and Children was created to provide access and opportunity for African American males to be visible leaders in taking a stand for women and children. Our goal is to create events where African American males showcase their unique talents, while making a positive and inspirational contribution to their community. Standing for women and children is not limited to one segment, or one profession, in our society. All of us can make a contribution, take a stand, be responsible and provide accountability to members of our communities.

For too long, African American males have been silent, while women and children are being hurt in their own homes, by someone that claims to love them. Brotherly Love provides the forum for men in our community to say--"we stand for women and children." This outlet, therefore allows victims to hear, and hopefully understand, that they have a voice, that help is available, and that they do not have to suffer in silence. Through Brotherly Love, African American men are saying that victims, perpetrators, family, friends, and the community can unite to encourage, build and strengthen healthy and safe lives for women and children.

Today, in our community, we mainly focus on economic development and community revitalization, but we do not discuss the violence that is occurring inside the home. One in every three women is a victim of sexual and domestic violence, and this violence is usually perpetrated by someone they know and trust. Most of us know someone personally that has been hurt by violence. We need to say to victims that help is available, that it is not their fault, and they do not deserve the abuse. We also need to tell perpetrators that violence is not a healthy way to relate to someone you profess to love and that help is also is available for you. We need empowered families, friends, and communities providing support and appropriate assistance to victims and perpetrators. We do not have to do this alone. Our communities need to know about the violence perpetrated against women and children. And that can be accomplished when they hear from African American males taking a stand for women and children. Brotherly Love provides events to the public that are culturally relevant, fun, and inspirational.

On Saturday, February 5, 2004, Brotherly Love will be sponsoring, "An Evening of Jazz", benefiting two local programs: SafePlace and Lisa's Hope Chest. SafePlace exists to end rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence. (www.austin-safeplace.org) Lisa's Hope Chest provides gently used clothing to men and women transitioning to work. (www.lisashopechest.org) On this evening, African American male musicians will be sharing their gift of music to communicate their stance for women and children. As a community, we will hear from the collective voices of African American men and experience their uniquely expressed, powerful leadership. We hope you will take part in this worthwhile effort and take a stand for women and children.
